What Is Vedic Astrology? A Complete Introduction
Vedic astrology — known as Jyotish, the "science of light" — is one of the world's oldest systems of astrology, rooted in the ancient Vedic tradition of India. This introduction covers what it is and how it works.
Origins
Jyotish is one of the six Vedangas (limbs of the Vedas) and has been practised for thousands of years. Its foundational text, the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, systematised the principles still used today.
Core principle
Vedic astrology is built on the idea that the positions of the planets at your birth reflect the patterns and tendencies of your life. It is deeply connected to the concept of karma — the chart is seen as a map of tendencies carried into this life, which free will then navigates.
What it analyses
From your Janam Kundli (birth chart), Jyotish examines the twelve houses, the nine planets, the twelve signs and the Nakshatras to describe personality, career, relationships, health and — through the dasha system — the timing of life events.
The sidereal difference
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, aligned with the actual positions of the stars, corrected by an ayanamsa (usually Lahiri). This is the main technical difference from Western astrology, which uses the tropical zodiac.
What makes it distinctive
- The Moon's centrality — your Rashi (Moon sign) is emphasised over the Sun sign.
- The dasha timing system — a sophisticated method for timing events.
- Nakshatras — 27 lunar mansions adding fine detail.
- Remedial measures — practical steps to work with the chart.
A balanced view
Vedic astrology is best understood as a map of tendencies and timing — a lens for self-understanding, not a fixed script. Free will and effort shape how the chart's potential unfolds.
