What is Kaal Sarp Dosha?
Kaal Sarp Dosha forms when all seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) are hemmed between the shadow points Rahu and Ketu. Traditionally it is associated with delays, sudden ups and downs, and intensity — though its real effect always depends on the complete chart.
How this calculator checks it
We compute the exact longitude of every planet and Rahu/Ketu, then check whether all seven planets fall on a single side of the Rahu–Ketu axis. If even one planet sits on the other side, there is no Kaal Sarp Dosha — not even a partial one, a common misconception.
The 12 Types of Kaal Sarp Dosha
The twelve types are named after serpent kings and correspond to the twelve houses Rahu can occupy: Anant (Rahu in 1st), Kulik (2nd), Vasuki (3rd), Shankhpal (4th), Padma (5th), Mahapadma (6th), Takshak (7th), Karkotak (8th), Shankhachud (9th), Ghatak (10th), Vishdhar (11th) and Sheshnag (12th). Each type is said to emphasise the themes of the house Rahu occupies — for example Takshak (7th house) is associated with challenges in marriage and partnerships, while Ghatak (10th house) relates to professional obstacles. In all cases Ketu occupies the opposite house. The specific effects are always interpreted in the context of the whole chart, not the type name alone.
What Kaal Sarp Dosha Does Not Mean
Several common misconceptions surround this yoga. First, a single planet outside the Rahu–Ketu axis cancels it entirely — there is no “partial” Kaal Sarp Dosha. Second, the dosha does not guarantee a difficult life; many highly successful individuals have it and credit the intensity it brings for their drive. Third, it is not inherited — children of parents with Kaal Sarp Dosha do not automatically have it; each chart is independent. Fourth, the dosha's effects are most pronounced in the dashas of Rahu and Ketu; during other planetary periods the impact is typically much milder. A full chart analysis reveals whether other yogas balance or amplify the effect.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check for Kaal Sarp Dosha?
Enter your date, time and place of birth. The tool computes all planetary positions and checks them against the Rahu–Ketu axis to determine whether Kaal Sarp Dosha is present, and its type.
Is Kaal Sarp Dosha always bad?
No. It is one factor among many. Classical astrology notes that a strong chart, favourable dashas and remedies can greatly reduce any effect. Many successful people have this yoga.
What are the types of Kaal Sarp Dosha?
There are twelve named types (Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhachud, Ghatak, Vishdhar, Sheshnag) based on which house Rahu occupies.
Does a planet on the Rahu–Ketu axis itself break Kaal Sarp Dosha?
If a planet is conjunct Rahu or Ketu (i.e., in the same house), it is considered hemmed between the nodes, not outside them, so it does not break the yoga. Only a planet clearly positioned on the opposite side of the axis cancels it.
Is Kaal Sarp Dosha the same as Kaal Sarp Yoga?
'Dosha' and 'Yoga' are sometimes used interchangeably for this formation. Strictly speaking, yoga means a planetary combination; dosha implies a flaw. The classical texts use both. Most modern practitioners use 'Kaal Sarp Dosha' when discussing its challenges.
