What Is Rashi? Your Moon Sign in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology, when someone asks "what is your sign?" they usually mean your Rashi — your Moon sign. Unlike Western astrology, which centres on the Sun, Vedic astrology gives the Moon a place of primary importance.
What Rashi means
Your Rashi is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth. There are twelve rashis, from Mesha (Aries) to Meena (Pisces), each ruled by a planet.
Why the Moon is so important
The Moon represents the mind, emotions and inner self. In a tradition focused on how you experience life internally, the Moon's sign becomes central. Much of Vedic prediction — including the Vimshottari Dasha timing system — is calculated from the Moon's position.
Rashi and Nakshatra
Within each Rashi, the Moon also occupies a specific Nakshatra (lunar mansion), which refines the reading further. Learn more in our guide to Nakshatras.
Rashi vs Lagna vs Sun sign
- Rashi (Moon sign): your mind and emotions.
- Lagna (Ascendant): your body, temperament and life direction.
- Sun sign: your core identity and vitality (less emphasised in daily Vedic practice).
A complete reading uses all three. See our detailed comparison of Rashi vs Lagna.
