What is the Navamsa (D9) Chart? A Complete Guide
Beyond the main birth chart (the D1 or Rashi chart), Vedic astrology uses divisional charts that zoom into specific areas of life. The most important of these is the Navamsa, or D9 chart.
What Navamsa means
"Navamsa" means "ninth division." Each of the twelve signs (30°) is divided into nine parts of 3°20' each, and each part maps to a sign in the D9 chart. The result is a second chart derived mathematically from the first.
Why the D9 is so important
The Navamsa is traditionally used to assess:
- Marriage and the spouse — the D9 is the primary chart for relationship analysis.
- The true strength of planets — a planet strong in D1 but weak in D9 may not fully deliver its promise, and vice versa.
- The deeper, inner potential of the chart, especially in the second half of life.
Vargottama: a special strength
When a planet occupies the same sign in both the D1 and D9 charts, it is called vargottama and is considered especially strong and reliable.
How it is used in practice
An astrologer reads the D1 and D9 together. The D1 shows the outer events and structure; the D9 reveals the underlying strength and the marriage picture. A promise in the D1 that is also supported in the D9 is far more likely to fully manifest.
