What is the Vimshottari Dasha?

The Vimshottari Dasha divides life into a 120-year cycle split among the nine planets. Each planet rules a stretch of time called a Mahadasha, subdivided into Antardashas. The planet ruling your current period strongly colours the themes and events of that phase.

Why the current dasha matters

Two people with similar charts can have very different years because they are running different dashas. Knowing your current Mahadasha and Antardasha is the first step to understanding the timing of career moves, marriage, and major changes — which your full report maps out in detail.

The 9 Mahadasha Periods and What They Bring

The nine Mahadasha periods in the Vimshottari system are: Ketu (7 years) — often a period of detachment and spiritual seeking; Venus (20 years) — associated with relationships, creativity and material pleasure; Sun (6 years) — career, authority and identity; Moon (10 years) — emotions, home and nurturing; Mars (7 years) — energy, ambition and conflict; Rahu (18 years) — worldly ambition, disruption and rapid change; Jupiter (16 years) — wisdom, expansion, marriage and children; Saturn (19 years) — discipline, hard work, delays and eventual reward; Mercury (17 years) — intellect, communication, trade and learning. The quality of each period depends heavily on the strength and placement of that planet in your birth chart — a well-placed Jupiter Mahadasha can be the most expansive period of your life.

Reading Mahadasha and Antardasha Together

Within each Mahadasha, a complete sub-cycle of all nine planets runs as Antardashas in the same sequence, but proportionally compressed. The Mahadasha planet sets the broad theme; the Antardasha planet colours the specific months. For example, during a Jupiter Mahadasha, the Saturn Antardasha often brings a period of consolidation — growth continues but with more structure and patience required. When the Mahadasha and Antardasha planets are friendly (e.g., Jupiter–Moon), the sub-period tends to flow well. When they are in tension (e.g., Jupiter–Rahu), there may be ambition mixed with confusion or excess. Reading both levels together is standard practice in Jyotish and is how your personalized report interprets the current timing of your life.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my current dasha?

Enter your date, time and place of birth. Because the dasha sequence starts from your birth Nakshatra, an accurate birth time gives the most reliable current period.

What is the difference between Mahadasha and Antardasha?

The Mahadasha is the main planetary period (years long); the Antardasha is a sub-period within it (months to a couple of years) ruled by another planet, refining the theme.

Why is birth time important for dasha?

The dasha sequence is anchored to the Moon's exact position at birth (your Nakshatra), which depends on the birth time — so an accurate time matters for correct dates.

How long does a Mahadasha last?

Each planet rules a fixed period: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20 years, Sun 6 years, Moon 10 years, Mars 7 years, Rahu 18 years, Jupiter 16 years, Saturn 19 years, Mercury 17 years. Together they total 120 years, one complete Vimshottari cycle.

Can I be in a good Dasha and still have a difficult year?

Yes. A good Mahadasha provides a generally supportive backdrop, but the Antardasha (sub-period) within it may belong to a planet that is challenging in your chart. Transits can also bring short-term difficulty within an otherwise positive period.
