What is Gun Milan / Ashtakoot matching?
Gun Milan (also called Kundli Milan or Ashtakoot Milan) is the classical Vedic method of comparing two birth charts for marriage compatibility. It examines eight factors, called kootas, based mainly on the Moon's nakshatra and rashi of each partner, and awards points that total a maximum of 36 gunas. This calculator is fully deterministic — the score comes from the traditional lookup tables, not from any AI or estimation.

How is the score read traditionally?
As a classical guideline, a total below 18 is considered a weak match, 18–24 acceptable, 25–32 very good, and 33–36excellent. These bands are guidelines, not verdicts. A high score with an unaddressed dosha, or a modest score with strong cancellations, can each tell a different story — which is why the full charts matter, not the number alone. We do not present any “accuracy percentage” or a guaranteed marriage prediction, because neither exists in the tradition.
Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha
Nadi carries the most weight (8 of 36). When both partners share the same Nadi, it scores zero — called Nadi dosha. Bhakoot(7 points) scores zero for certain Moon-sign distances — 6/8, 5/9 or 2/12 — known as Bhakoot dosha. Classical texts describe several conditions under which both doshas are considered cancelled (for example, the same rashi lord, or a strong Graha Maitri). This tool reports the doshas factually; whether they materially apply is a full-chart judgement.
