D1 vs D9 Chart: Key Differences in Vedic Astrology
Two charts come up constantly in Vedic astrology: the D1 and the D9. Understanding how they differ — and why both are read together — clears up a lot of confusion.
The D1 (Rashi) chart
The D1 is your main birth chart — the direct map of planetary positions across the twelve houses. It shows the outer structure of your life: events, circumstances, the areas each planet influences. When people say "my Kundli," they usually mean the D1.
The D9 (Navamsa) chart
The D9 is a divisional chart derived from the D1 by dividing each sign into nine parts. It reveals the inner strength of planets and is the primary chart for marriage and the deeper potential of the chart. Learn more in our guide to the Navamsa (D9) chart.
Key differences
- Purpose: D1 = outer events and life structure; D9 = inner strength and marriage.
- Derivation: D1 is direct; D9 is calculated from the D1.
- Focus: D1 for general life; D9 to confirm the real strength of a promise.
Why read them together
A planet may look powerful in the D1 but weak in the D9 — suggesting its promise is partial. When a placement is strong in both, its results are far more dependable. A planet in the same sign in both charts is vargottama — especially strong.
