What Is Lagna (Ascendant) in Kundli?

If there is one term worth understanding in Vedic astrology, it is Lagna — the Ascendant. It is the anchor of your entire birth chart, and it is what makes your Kundli uniquely yours.

What Lagna means

The Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. Because the Earth rotates, this rising sign changes roughly every two hours, cycling through all twelve signs in a day.

Why it is the 1st house

The Lagna becomes your 1st house, and every other house is counted from it. It governs your body, appearance, temperament, vitality and overall life direction. It is, in a sense, the lens through which your whole chart is read.

Why Lagna matters more than your sun sign

Popular horoscopes use only your sun sign, which is the same for everyone born across an entire month. Your Lagna, by contrast, is specific to your birth time and place — which is why two people born the same day can have very different charts. This precision is the strength of Vedic astrology.

Why exact birth time is essential

Since the Lagna changes every ~2 hours, an inaccurate birth time can place you in the wrong Ascendant entirely — shifting every house and changing your reading. This is why we stress birth-time accuracy.

Lagna vs Rashi

People often confuse Lagna (Ascendant, the rising sign) with Rashi (Moon sign). They are different points that describe different things — see our full comparison of Rashi vs Lagna.
