What Is a Pada in a Nakshatra?

If Nakshatras add detail to a chart, padas add even finer resolution. Each of the 27 Nakshatras is divided into four padas — and knowing your pada refines your reading considerably.

What a pada is

A pada ("quarter") is one-fourth of a Nakshatra, spanning 3°20'. Since each Nakshatra is 13°20', its four padas together cover the full span. So the zodiac has 27 × 4 = 108 padas in total — a number of deep significance in Vedic tradition.

Why padas matter

Each pada maps to a sign in the Navamsa (D9) chart. This is the crucial link: your Moon's pada determines its Navamsa placement, which refines its strength and meaning. Two people in the same Nakshatra but different padas can have meaningfully different charts.

Padas and personality

Each pada carries a slightly different flavour, colouring how the Nakshatra's energy expresses. For example, the four padas of a single Nakshatra fall into different Navamsa signs, adding earth, air, fire or water nuances to the base star.

Padas in practice

When an astrologer notes you are born in "Rohini Pada 2" or "Ashwini Pada 4," they are pinpointing your Moon far more precisely than the sign alone — which improves the accuracy of both interpretation and the dasha calculation.

The precision principle

Padas are one more reason birth-time accuracy matters — the Moon moves through a pada in a matter of hours.
