How to Understand Planetary Positions in a Kundli
The heart of chart reading is interpreting planetary positions. Each planet in your Kundli carries information across several layers — and combining those layers is the skill that turns a grid of symbols into meaning.
Layer 1: Which sign is the planet in?
The sign gives the planet its flavour and dignity. A planet in its own sign or exaltation is strong and expresses its best qualities; in debilitation it is weakened. For example, Jupiter exalted in Cancer behaves very differently from Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn.
Layer 2: Which house is the planet in?
The house tells you which area of life the planet influences — career (10th), marriage (7th), wealth (2nd/11th), and so on. See our guide to the 12 houses.
Layer 3: What does the planet naturally signify?
Each of the nine planets has a natural significance — Venus for love, Saturn for discipline, Mars for drive. Combine this with the house: Venus in the 10th, for example, can favour careers in art, beauty or client-facing work.
Layer 4: Aspects (drishti)
Planets "aspect" (influence) other houses and planets from a distance. Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself; Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have additional special aspects. Aspects can strengthen or challenge whatever they fall on.
Layer 5: Conjunctions and yogas
When planets sit together, they blend energies, sometimes forming named yogas. For instance, Sun and Mercury together can form Budhaditya Yoga (sharp intellect).
Layer 6: Dignity and strength
Finally, weigh how strong each planet actually is — through its sign dignity, the D9 chart, and its freedom from affliction. A well-placed planet delivers its promise; an afflicted one may struggle.
Put it together
Reading well means holding all these layers at once — which is why an accurate, structured report is so useful. Generate your personalized report to see every planet in your chart interpreted, or learn how to read a Janam Kundli.
