How to Read a Janam Kundli: A Beginner's Guide

1 August 2024·8 min read

A Janam Kundli can look intimidating at first — a grid of boxes filled with abbreviations and numbers. But once you know what each part represents, reading it becomes logical. This guide walks you through the fundamentals step by step.

Start with the Lagna (Ascendant)

The single most important point in a Kundli is the Lagna — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It anchors the entire chart and becomes the 1st house. Everything else is read relative to it. If you are new to charts, read our guide on the difference between Rashi and Lagna first.

Understand the 12 houses (bhavas)

The chart is divided into twelve houses, each governing an area of life — self, wealth, communication, home, creativity, health, marriage, transformation, fortune, career, gains and losses. The house a planet sits in tells you which area of life it influences.

Learn the 9 planets (grahas)

Nine planets are placed across the houses: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Each has a natural significance (Venus = love and beauty, Saturn = discipline, etc.). The planet tells you what kind of energy is acting.

Combine house + sign + planet

Reading a chart is essentially combining three layers:

  • Planet — the energy (e.g. Mars = drive).
  • House — the life area it affects (e.g. 10th = career).
  • Sign — the flavour or dignity of that energy (e.g. Mars in its own sign is strong).

So "Mars in the 10th house in a strong sign" suggests energetic, ambitious career drive. This layering is the core skill of chart reading.

Check the important yogas and doshas

Beyond individual placements, astrologers look for combinations — yogas (auspicious patterns) and doshas (challenging ones like Manglik Dosha or Kaal Sarp Dosha).

Add the timing layer: Dasha

Finally, the Vimshottari Dasha system shows when different planets activate, turning a static chart into a life timeline.
