What Are the 12 Rashis (Signs) in Vedic Astrology?

The zodiac in Vedic astrology is divided into twelve rashis (signs), each spanning 30°. Every sign has a ruling planet, an element and a distinct character. Here is a guide to all twelve.

The 12 rashis

• Mesha (Aries) — ruled by Mars; fire; bold, pioneering, energetic.
• Vrishabha (Taurus) — ruled by Venus; earth; stable, sensual, patient.
• Mithuna (Gemini) — ruled by Mercury; air; curious, communicative, versatile.
• Karka (Cancer) — ruled by the Moon; water; nurturing, emotional, protective.
• Simha (Leo) — ruled by the Sun; fire; regal, confident, generous.
• Kanya (Virgo) — ruled by Mercury; earth; analytical, precise, service-minded.
• Tula (Libra) — ruled by Venus; air; balanced, diplomatic, refined.
• Vrischika (Scorpio) — ruled by Mars; water; intense, secretive, transformative.
• Dhanu (Sagittarius) — ruled by Jupiter; fire; philosophical, optimistic, freedom-loving.

• Meena (Pisces) — ruled by Jupiter; water; compassionate, intuitive, spiritual.

Elements and qualities

The signs are grouped by element (fire, earth, air, water) and by modality (cardinal, fixed, dual), which shapes how their energy expresses. Fire signs are dynamic, earth signs practical, air signs intellectual, water signs emotional.

Rashi as Moon sign

In everyday Vedic usage, your "rashi" usually means your Moon sign — the sign the Moon occupied at birth — which is central to your emotional nature and to dasha calculations.

Signs vs houses

Signs (rashis) describe how energy expresses; houses describe which area of life it affects. Both combine in a full reading.
