Kundli Matching for Marriage: How Guna Milan Works
Kundli matching (Guna Milan or Ashtakoota Milan) is the traditional Vedic method of checking compatibility between two people before marriage by comparing their birth charts.
What is Guna Milan?
Guna Milan compares the Moon's position and Nakshatra in both charts across eight factors (Ashtakoota), assigning points called gunas. The maximum score is 36 gunas.
The eight kootas
- Varna – spiritual compatibility (1 point)
- Vashya – mutual attraction and control (2)
- Tara – health and well-being (3)
- Yoni – physical and intimate compatibility (4)
- Graha Maitri – mental compatibility (5)
- Gana – temperament (6)
- Bhakoot – love and family (7)
- Nadi – health and genes (8)
What score is considered good?
Generally, a score above 18 out of 36 is considered acceptable, and above 24 is considered very good. However, the score alone is never the full picture.
Beyond the score
A complete matching also checks Manglik Dosha, the 7th house, and Venus/Jupiter placements in both charts. A high guna score with serious dosha mismatches still needs careful interpretation.
