What Is a Nakshatra in Vedic Astrology?
Alongside the twelve signs, Vedic astrology uses a finer division of the zodiac: the 27 Nakshatras, or lunar mansions. They add a crucial layer of detail — and your birth Nakshatra is central to timing.
What a Nakshatra is
A Nakshatra is one of 27 segments of the zodiac, each spanning 13°20'. As the Moon travels through the sky, it passes through one Nakshatra roughly each day. The Nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth is your birth star (Janma Nakshatra).
Why Nakshatras matter
- They refine your Moon sign. Two people with the same Rashi can have different Nakshatras, giving distinct temperaments.
- They drive dasha timing. Your birth Nakshatra determines your starting Vimshottari Dasha — so it directly shapes the timing of your whole life.
- They inform matching. Nakshatra compatibility is central to Guna Milan.
Structure of a Nakshatra
Each Nakshatra has a ruling planet, a symbol, a presiding deity, and is divided into four padas (quarters) that add further nuance.
The 27 Nakshatras
They run from Ashwini (the first) through Revati (the last), each with its own character — from the pioneering energy of Ashwini to the artistic charm of Purva Phalguni to the spiritual depth of Revati.
