How Is a Kundli Calculated From Date, Time and Place of Birth?
A Kundli feels mystical, but its foundation is precise astronomy. Understanding how it is calculated helps you appreciate why accuracy — especially of birth time — matters so much.
Step 1: The three inputs
Every calculation begins with three pieces of data: your date of birth, your exact time of birth, and your place of birth. Miss or mis-state any of these and the chart shifts.
Step 2: Geocoding the birthplace
The place of birth is converted into precise latitude and longitude. These coordinates, combined with the time, determine what was rising on the horizon (the Lagna) and where the houses fall.
Step 3: Computing planetary positions
Using a high-precision astronomical engine, the exact positions of the Sun, Moon, planets and lunar nodes are computed for that instant. This is real ephemeris-grade astronomy, not lookup tables.
Step 4: Applying the ayanamsa
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac. To convert the astronomically-calculated (tropical) positions into sidereal ones, an ayanamsa correction is applied — most commonly the Lahiri ayanamsa. This accounts for the slow wobble of the Earth's axis (precession).
Step 5: Casting the houses and Lagna
With the sidereal positions and the exact rising point, the twelve houses are cast (Vedic astrology commonly uses the Whole Sign house system), and each planet is assigned to a house and sign.
Step 6: Deriving Nakshatra, Dasha, yogas
From the Moon's exact degree, the Nakshatra and the Vimshottari Dasha timeline are derived. Deterministic rules then flag doshas (like Manglik Dosha) and yogas.
Why this matters
Because the Lagna changes every ~2 hours, even a modest birth-time error changes the result. This is the mathematical reason behind our emphasis on birth-time accuracy.
