Ashtakoota Kundli Matching Explained
Ashtakoota ("eight factors") is the framework behind the familiar 36-point Guna Milan used in Kundli matching. This article goes one level deeper into how the eight koota actually work.
Why eight factors?
Rather than judging compatibility on a single measure, Ashtakoota breaks it into eight dimensions of married life — from instinctive attraction to health, temperament and emotional bonding. Each is scored, and the weights increase with the factor's traditional importance.
The eight koota and their weights
- Varna (1): ego and spiritual compatibility.
- Vashya (2): mutual control and magnetism.
- Tara / Dina (3): destiny and well-being, via birth-star compatibility.
- Yoni (4): instinctive and physical compatibility (symbolised by animal archetypes).
- Graha Maitri (5): friendship of the Moon-sign lords — mental rapport.
- Gana (6): temperament type (Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa).
- Bhakoot (7): emotional and financial harmony — see Bhakoot dosha.
- Nadi (8): health and progeny — the highest-weighted factor, tied to Nadi dosha.
How the total works
The eight scores sum to a maximum of 36. Traditionally 18+ is considered workable. But two specific "dosha" flags — Nadi and Bhakoot — are watched closely because they carry the highest weights and the strongest traditional cautions.
Beyond Ashtakoota
Because Ashtakoota only uses the Moon and Nakshatra, experienced astrologers always combine it with a full-chart comparison — Manglik status, 7th houses, Venus and Jupiter, and dasha alignment. It is a screening tool, not the final word.
