What Is Antardasha in Vedic Astrology?

17 November 2024·5 min read

If the Mahadasha is the chapter of your life, the Antardasha is the paragraph. It is the sub-period that fine-tunes the timing of events within a major planetary period.

What an Antardasha is

Within every Mahadasha, the same nine planets each rule a sub-period called an Antardasha (also known as bhukti). So during your Jupiter Mahadasha, you pass through Jupiter–Jupiter, Jupiter–Saturn, Jupiter–Mercury, and so on.

How it refines timing

The Mahadasha sets the broad theme; the Antardasha determines which specific sub-current is active at any given time. The combination of the two planets — the Mahadasha lord and the Antardasha lord — describes the flavour of that particular window.

Reading a combination

For example, in a Venus Mahadasha – Jupiter Antardasha, you blend Venus themes (love, comfort, creativity) with Jupiter themes (growth, wisdom, fortune) — often a genuinely favourable, expansive period. A Mars–Saturn combination, by contrast, might mix drive with restriction, demanding patience.

Why the combination matters

Events rarely hinge on the Mahadasha alone. A supportive Antardasha inside a good Mahadasha is when opportunities crystallise; a challenging Antardasha even within a good Mahadasha can bring a temporary dip. This is why precise timing looks at both — see Mahadasha vs Antardasha.

The importance of accurate birth data

Because Antardasha dates are precise (down to weeks), they depend on an accurate birth time. A small time error shifts the sub-period dates — another reason birth-time accuracy matters.
