What Is a Birth Chart in Vedic Astrology?

10 August 2024·6 min read

A birth chart — called a Janam Kundli in Vedic astrology — is a map of the sky at the exact moment and location you were born. It is the single document from which all Vedic predictions flow.

What a birth chart captures

The chart records the positions of the nine planets across the twelve houses and twelve signs, as seen from your birthplace at your birth time. That snapshot is unique to you (and anyone born at the same instant and place).

What it contains

  • Lagna (Ascendant) — the rising sign, anchor of the chart.
  • Planetary positions — where each of the nine grahas sits.
  • Houses (bhavas) — the twelve life areas.
  • Nakshatra — the Moon's lunar mansion.
  • Dasha timeline — the planetary periods that time events.
  • Yogas and doshas — special combinations.

Vedic vs Western birth charts

Both use the same sky, but differ in method. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (based on the actual positions of the stars) with the Lahiri ayanamsa, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (tied to the seasons). This is why your "sign" can differ between the two systems.

What a birth chart can reveal

A well-read chart describes tendencies across personality, career, relationships, finances, health and the timing of major periods. It is best understood as a map of potentials and patterns, not a fixed script.

Why accuracy matters

Because the Lagna and house placements depend on birth time, accuracy is essential — see why exact birth time matters.
