What Are Planetary Transits (Gochar) in Vedic Astrology?

Your birth chart is fixed, but the planets keep moving. The current positions of the planets, read against your birth chart, are called transits (gochar) — and they are a key tool for understanding what is happening now.

What a transit is

A transit is the real-time movement of a planet through the zodiac as it passes over the houses and planets of your birth chart. As transiting planets form relationships with your natal placements, they activate different themes.

Transits vs Dashas

The two work together. The dasha gives the "permission" for an event (the active life theme); the transit provides the "trigger" (the timing). A big event typically needs both to align — a supportive dasha and a supportive transit.

The most important transits

• Saturn (Shani): the slowest classical planet, spending ~2.5 years per sign. Saturn's transits — especially Sade Sati (Saturn's ~7.5-year passage over the signs around your Moon) — bring restructuring, responsibility and maturity.
• Jupiter (Guru): spends ~1 year per sign; its transits bring growth, opportunity and expansion to whatever house it passes through.
• Rahu and Ketu: the nodes, transiting ~1.5 years per sign, bring unconventional shifts.

How to use transit knowledge

Knowing which houses Saturn and Jupiter are currently transiting helps you understand the present chapter — where you are being asked to grow (Saturn) and where opportunity is opening (Jupiter). Combined with your dasha, it explains the "why now?" of life events.

A balanced view

Transits describe the current cosmic weather — favourable and challenging phases. They are influences to work with, not fixed fates.
