Manglik Dosha vs Kuja Dosha: Are They the Same?
If you have researched Manglik status, you have probably seen three terms used almost interchangeably: Manglik Dosha, Mangal Dosha and Kuja Dosha. Are they the same thing? In short — yes. The difference is language and region, not astrology.
The same dosha, different names
All three terms refer to the identical condition: Mars placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house (from the Lagna, Moon or Venus). The naming simply reflects the word used for the planet Mars:
- Mangal is the Hindi/Sanskrit name for Mars — hence Mangal Dosha and Manglik Dosha ("of Mangal").
- Kuja is the name for Mars used widely in South India (Telugu, Kannada, Tamil traditions) — hence Kuja Dosha (or Kuja Dosham).
- Chevvai Dosham is the Tamil term for the same thing (Chevvai = Mars).
So why the confusion?
Because India has many astrological traditions and languages, the same concept picked up different regional names. Someone in Delhi might say "Manglik," someone in Hyderabad "Kuja Dosha," and someone in Chennai "Chevvai Dosham" — all describing the same Mars placement.
Are there any real differences?
The core rule is the same across traditions. Where you may see minor variation is in the specific cancellation rules and remedial customs, which differ slightly between regional schools. But the underlying diagnosis — where Mars sits — is identical.
