What Are Exalted and Debilitated Planets in Vedic Astrology?

The same planet can behave brilliantly in one chart and struggle in another — and a big part of the reason is dignity: whether the planet is exalted or debilitated. This concept is essential to reading any chart accurately.

What exaltation means

A planet is exalted (uchcha) when it sits in the sign where it expresses its qualities most powerfully and purely. An exalted planet is strong, confident and tends to deliver its best results.

What debilitation means

A planet is debilitated (neecha) when it sits in the sign opposite its exaltation — where its energy is weakest or most challenged. A debilitated planet may struggle to express its natural significations well.

The exaltation signs

• Sun — exalted in Aries, debilitated in Libra.
• Moon — exalted in Taurus, debilitated in Scorpio.
• Mars — exalted in Capricorn, debilitated in Cancer.
• Mercury — exalted in Virgo, debilitated in Pisces.
• Jupiter — exalted in Cancer, debilitated in Capricorn.
• Venus — exalted in Pisces, debilitated in Virgo.
• Saturn — exalted in Libra, debilitated in Aries.

Other levels of dignity

Between the extremes are other states: own sign (swakshetra — very strong), mooltrikona (a special strong portion), friendly/neutral/enemy signs. Together these form a scale of planetary strength.

Neecha Bhanga: cancelled debilitation

Importantly, a debilitated planet is not automatically doomed. Certain conditions cause Neecha Bhanga (cancellation of debilitation), which can even turn a debilitated planet into a source of great strength — a reminder that context always matters.

Why dignity matters

Dignity determines how well a planet delivers its promise. An exalted 10th-lord suggests strong career results; a debilitated one (without cancellation) may indicate struggle. This is why a planet's sign is read alongside its house.
